We are wrapping up our collab with the teams at Live Free Counselling & Consulting Services and Winrose Oasis Counselling Services with a message about mental health and rest
Mental Health & Sleep
Chronic sleep issues (sleep issues over time) can impact our mental health.
Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression have association with sleep issues.
Historically, sleeping problems were seen as a consequence of mental health issues, but growing evidence suggests that poor sleep may induce or exacerbate mental health issues, such as depression.
Sleep problems may become an added source of worry, creating anticipatory anxious feelings at bedtime that makes it harder to fall asleep.
Chronic sleep issues can cause irritability, fatigue, and decreased motivation and more.
Chronic sleep problems can be correlated with stress and mental health concerns.
Symptoms of sleep issues may include:
Difficulty falling asleep at night
Waking up during the night
Waking up too early
Not feeling well-rested after a night's sleep
Daytime tiredness or sleepiness
Irritability, depression or anxiety
Difficulty paying attention, focusing on tasks or remembering
Increased errors or accidents
Ongoing worries about sleep
If you notice the above symptoms over time, it is a good idea to check-in with your doctor, therapist and others on your support team.
What can I do to improve my bedtime routine and improve my mental health and wellbeing?
Limit social media/screen time before bed
Go to bed at the same/similar time each night
Hot shower
Turn down lights
Jot down racing thoughts
